On a More Personal Note…

So today, I’m going a little off topic as I have something personal I’d like to share in hopes that by sharing it with all of you, it will help keep me accountable for the future :-D.

I was always a pudgy kid. Never obese, just always a little rounder, a little curvier than my peers. My weight was always an ongoing battle – from being made fun of on the playground to being encouraged to put down the book and go outside to play while at home. Over the years, the weight would fluctuate – sophomore year of high school was awesome as miraculously 20 lbs just dropped right off. And then came college. And a year of working in not one but 2 restaurants. And graduate school. More ups and downs. And then came a REALLY stressful job in Hollywood. At times, it just felt like a battle that I may never win. Some days I looked in the mirror and loved what I saw: I had a rocking head of auburn hair and I was ok with not being stick thin. Other days, my confidence was not so resounding.

I joined Weight Watchers as a freshman in college and I’ve been on and off the program more times than I can count. When on plan, I’ve been super successful (we’re talking 40lbs people!), but I’ve let it slip over the last two years. Frustrated with more than just my weight, I have recently recommitted to getting healthy. It’s one of the few things in my crazy, ridiculous life that I can actually control, which I’ll admit has been much easier said than done, but here I am. Sharing with you all in hopes it will keep me motivated.

For anyone else out there counting points (or not) or just looking for some peer support, feel free to shoot me a note as I’d love to chat. The times when I’ve been the most successful were when I had a buddy to do the program with. Since moving to LA 6 years ago, I have yet to really find my Weight Watchers buddy. Any takers?

This has been something I’ve felt has controlled me my whole life and at a time when I’m finally realizing that I can’t control everything (shocker), this is something I can take action to get a hold of once and for all. The big 3-0 is in my sights and I have a lot I’d like to accomplish before it wakes up and smacks me in the face this December.

This blog is mainly a place for me to share my decorating advice with my small little corner of the world, but in the future from time to time, I may share the occasional story, recipe, or piece of motivation on my journey to finally getting healthy and feeling better about myself.

In that vein, this little article popped up today and served as a little bit of humorous motivation for me. So I’m sharing it with all of you. I really enjoyed Ana Gasteyer’s honesty and Weight Watchers-inspired humorous twist on a classic song. Enjoy!

Wrapping Up the Reno

So where did we leave off?… Right, we had a brand new wood floor, a single warped board and a cement-bare entryway.

20130614-132903.jpg
Jefe and I came home on Friday to find that miraculously, they managed to fix the wooden floor.  I don’t know if they had to rip it all up (which was what was initially mentioned when I pointed out the lone survivor of the Great Warpage) or if they found a way to jimmy it in, but all I knew is that it was gone and our wood floors looked great.
IMG_1549
The tile was down with spacers, but still needed to be grouted.  Fine.  One more day of reno wasn’t going to hurt us.  Famous last words.  Jefe and I spent Saturday watching men come in and out of our apartment, finishing some things and leaving others behind.
In the end, once all the workmen were gone, we were left with dirty walls that required 3 hours of scrubbing with Clorox wipes and Magic Erasers (thank god for Mr. Clean), and baseboards that our own handyman said “looked like hell.”  There was also tile cement left in all sorts of nefarious places: clumps all over our kitchen and bathroom sinks as well as on the counters in the kitchen, marks at eye level on the walls (how on Earth did cement from the floor get that high?!) as well as a 5 inch smudge of cement on our exterior door frame which I still have yet to clean.  Needless to say, I was a bit more than frustrated at this point so I didn’t take pictures.  Bad blogger, I know.  Lesson learned.  I did manage to grab this one today of the spot still to be dealt with:

Now I get that renos involve dirt.  All kinds of dirt.  Especially when you’re talking about floors.  But to say that we were less than thrilled with the state of our apartment after they left is quite the understatement.  And we don’t even own the place.  If I were the landlord, I’d be pissed at the finished product.  The main floors look great, but any details (ie-the baseboards), look like the flooring guys did the bare minimum.  Case in point:

Exhibit A
Well, after a Saturday filled with this fun, Jefe woke up on Sunday and said “let’s buy some furniture.”  I don’t know if it was all the dust in the air he may have inhaled the day before, but I certainly wasn’t going to argue with him.  So we packed ourselves in the car and headed out.
To his credit, when we had to push all of our furniture to accommodate the repairs, we noticed that our 3 Ikea Lack bookshelves had seen better days.  Namely, they stood at a severe angle.  My poor hunchbacked bookcases 😦

After 2 years of books stacked on them:
IMG_1555
This is not an optical illusion.  These are, in fact, that crooked.
We looked and there was no way to tighten/fix them and we didn’t trust them to withstand much more, particularly if “the big one” hit (for you non-Californians, that’s referring to the big earthquake everyone says that we are “due” to get any day now).  And when we looked around the room, particularly at the lovely new Crate & Barrel TV stand we got (that I have somehow failed to share with you until now), we really felt we could switch up our style a bit.
DSCN1140
Now, Jefe and I are both at the point that we’d love to stop handing over the Benjamins to the big blue & yellow Swedish man in Burbank.  But we’re also not rolling in it (yet) either.  So off to Ikea we went.
Thanks to Operation Homify, we decided we had the following criteria for new bookshelves:
1) Had to coordinate with our current furniture and the more traditional style we’re aiming for
2) Had to fit the space
3) Wouldn’t break within a year or two
4) Did not cost an arm and a leg.
Enter the Hemnes.  She’s a beaut, isn’t she?  I’m in love with her.  I want to make little book babies with her.  I’m THRILLED to finally have a space in our home where I can “style” our books.  The Lack versions clearly didn’t allow for that, so I’ve been playing with this guy pretty much non stop since we got it.  It’s definitely still a work in progress, but here you go:
DSCN1119
As it didn’t fit all of our books, we needed to get a second, smaller shelf.  I would have loved to have just brought home a pint-sized Hemnes, but they don’t make one yet. (Why Ikea hasn’t thought to make a solid wood, short bookcase yet is completely beyond me).  So we resorted to the old standby – the Billy.
billy-bookcase__0185775_PE337874_S4
After assembling quite a few for his parents’ reno, I’m pretty sure Jefe could assemble one of these in his sleep at this point.  So he took the Billy assembly while I tackled the behemoth Hemnes (mind you, it’s nearly 7 feet tall).  Once built in the open space on our floor, we finally could clean up the place and make it feel like home again.  An hour of cleaning and rearranging later, we had a great little living room update.

And a little surprise: I’ve been working to make our desk space more appealing (in hopes I’ll get to blogging a bit more often), so you get to see some of those upgrades too!  We’ve got new art, which is an ode to my lovely little hometown.  It’s a picture of the front of Lancaster’s Central Market, the oldest continuously operating farmers’ market in the country.  It’s been around for HUNDREDS of years.  Has anything in LA been around that long?!
DSCN1127 We added the desk lamp awhile ago, but switched it to my side of the desk when we added the new bookcase and relocated our standing lamp.  I finally went through the mountain of stray papers I had strewn across my side and added these little guys on top of my organizer, a recent find on my first trip to the Rose Bowl Flea Market (more on that in the coming week):

And there you have it.  Although we’re still fighting to get our washer in working order (it had to be removed to re-tile the space where it was in the hallway and has yet to work since attempting to hook it up again), Jefe and I are pretty happy that we were able to turn a trying situation into an opportunity for some updating.

Current Obsession: Campaign Dressers

I have a confession to make: I’ve been keeping something from you all.  I’ve been having a love affair.  It was a slow burn for quite some time, but lately it’s become a full-on longing and NEED.  You see – I’m in love with a dresser.  A campaign dresser to be exact.  Jefe and I are actually in the market for a storage piece to replace this guy below (please excuse the horrible or should I say complete lack of styling on the dresser top) and I’d love nothing more than to bring a little campaign home.

DSCN0826

To Jefe’s point, the campaign style doesn’t REALLY go with anything we currently have.  But that just gives me an excuse to do a little more restyling which I will obviously take an opportunity to do ;-).  Honestly, I think a deep red with some serious vintage brass hardware could work; we have plenty of red tones in our living room and adding some gold accents wouldn’t be hard.  And I’d love to bring in a quality vintage piece in to our otherwise newly furnished home.

So here’s a little ode to the other love of my life, Mr. Campaign.

I’m head over heels for this indigo version:

And here’s a great, cost-effective DIY version that’s actually an Ikea Rast hacked to campaign perfection:

So what do you guys think?  Is anyone else crushing on Mr. Campaign quite like I am?  He is VERY trendy right now, but as it is a true vintage piece, just with some updated colors, I think it could fit in to a variety of styles and spaces and not look dated 2 years from now.

Happy Saturday to you all; Jefe and I are headed out for our usual Saturday night out: Dodger Stadium!

Q & A: The Great Merge – Part 2

As promised, today I’m bringing you Part 2 of Ali & Justin’s GREAT MERGE. For this post, we’re going to focus on that awkward little room just off their bedroom. They’re in desperate need of storage space and have more dressers than they have room for.

For a little refresher, here’s Ali’s little video tour:

As they don’t really need an office space, the next obvious solution is to turn it in to a dressing area. There unfortunately isn’t any space to add any additional storage pieces so today’s all about with working with what they’ve got. Starting with the left side of the room, I would use that little section of wall beside the lamp for some accessory storage.

Moving over to the small dresser with mirror, this is where Ali does her hair. And if I remember anything about living with Ali, she is always doing crazy stuff with her hair… like the time she tried to dye it white. I may never let her live that one down ;-).

I would use a combination of drawer organizers and decorative bowls for things like headbands, bobby pins, and smaller bottles of hair products. Then for combs, brushes, and smaller curling irons, she could use a large vase or apothecary jar.

For larger bottles of product she could neatly arrange them on a tray to streamline the look.

Lastly, I would suggest using a nicer, metal 3M hook on the right side of the dresser by the coat rack to hang her hairdryer so it’s within arms reach but is out of sight.

If Ali and Justin really want to get ambitious, I would hang the flatscreen TV on the wall. As it’s already a decent distance from the bed, a few more inches won’t matter. That way, it clears significant space on top of the dresser for additional storage.  And Ali could turn it in to a mini gallery wall!

I would also utilize decorative or 3M hooks (to avoid putting holes in the wall) on the wall to the right of the larger dresser. Ali mentioned that Justin prefers to hang rather than fold and this area would give him some additional options besides tossing items on top of others on the coat rack.

3M Hookvia

Continuing around the room, I would get some nice baskets for the bookshelf they’re using for storage.  It appears to be a tall Billy bookcase, in which case you can buy additional, individual shelves to make the most of the space.  On either side of the bookshelf, I would use that for additional storage.  On one side, Ali could install some towel racks for all of those scarves I know she still has.

On the opposite side, she could use a variety of solutions for her jewelry.  I think this painted cutlery tray hung on the wall is a great, easy solution that adds some visual interest:

Cutlery Storagevia

Now, lets talk style. All of these little DIY storage and organization projects can be areas where Ali can really add some of her eclectic flare, between hanging her jewelry as decor to using vintage frames. To update the dressers, Ali can replace the hardware with something a bit more her style.

And to really amp things up, I would replace that overhead can light with something a little more glamorous and less 1980’s. It may require calling an electrian, but for the $50-$100 it would cost, it the difference it would make is worth the cost.

West Elm Capiz Light

I am loving the West Elm Small Capiz Chandelier which would bring in softer, rounder shapes in to the otherwise angular room. The price, however, may not be what Ali’s looking for, so she could try her hand at one of these DIY versions:

Design Sponge Capiz Shell Tutorial
Freshly Picked  Capiz Chandelier

Although this extra little room is a bit odd, I think with some of the above suggestions Ali can really add some much needed storage as well as real eclectic style that she likes so much.

So how about you all?  Any creative storage solutions that are both function and pretty on the eyes?  I’m a HUGE fan of 3M hooks; I use them for my long dangly necklaces and my fancy purses I’d rather not shove in the dusty space underneath our bed (just keeping it real, kids).

Pop Goes the… Pipe?

For those that have been following via social media (Facebook, Twitter & Instagram) will know, I spent the vast majority of my weekend working on my first “real” gig as a production designer. I plan on giving you all the full rundown on that in the coming weeks.

While on set, I was working on some great posts for you all between takes including Ali & Justin’s Great Merge Part 2, another reader Q & A from my mid-century modern loving friend Christy, as well as my Top 10 List of Tools on the Go. But in lieu of finishing those up for you all last night, Jefe and I came home to a bit of a mess…

I was greeted at my own front door by our apartment building repairman, informing me that the pipe under our sink had burst, and had been spraying water ALL DAY. Thank God another neighbor noticed it was leaking in the garage down below or it could have gotten a LOT worse. As it was, when I walked in, I noticed a solid inch of water in some places, and it covered the floor in the kitchen, parts of the entryway and nice 2 foot pool by the entry to our living room. Not exactly what you’re hoping to find at home after a long day at the office.

And mind you, this is not 2 months after we resolved our SECOND leaky washer situation (we’ve basically been fighting with our in-unit washer and dryer since we moved in; I’ve spared you the mundane and infuriating details). Needless to say, I’ve seen our repairman WAY more than I ever imagined possible since we moved to this apartment. But one thing I will say is that they are prompt. And yet, despite all of our issues, I think Jefe and I still would have chosen this place over our last apartment where things were just left broken. Our current landlord actually cares if we’re happy in our home, which definitely goes a long way when you’re dealing with so many issues.

Anyways, moral of the story is that posting may be a little later & slimmer this week due to water-damage difficulties. Please excuse us for this temporary interruption….

And here’s a little glimpse of the awesome time Jefe and I were having at 10:30pm tonight: cleaning out our water soaked, mildewy cabinet under our sink. I didn’t even bother to get a picture of the puddles of water; I was so worried about cleaning that up as quickly as possible before it dribbled its way to our desk and the 15,000 cords we have dangling on the floor.

So that’s how we spent our night. Hope everyone else’s was much less eventful!
