Q & A: The Great Merge – Part 1

Today’s reader Q & A comes from my college roomie, Ali.  Some of my first true interior design projects occured when she and I moved into a cramped room in our sorority house.  It included my first wall paint job (in the perfect buttery yellow) and styling the room with coordinating lamps, bedding and art.  Not to mention finding an appropriate place for the all-so-important mini-fridge and bar.

Since those days that suddenly seem too far away, Ali’s done her fair share of trapsing across the globe.  As a musician, artist, and all-around bohemian extraordinaire, her style is quite eclectic.  Recently she moved in with her boyfriend in Washington, D.C. and she’s encountered the same problem most of us have when taking the plunge into co-habitation with a significant other: the Great Merge of belongings.

Here’s Ali’s request:

Hi Mal!

Here’s some info on a couple of current problem areas (there are several more…) of our new place. As we enter Week 3 of unpacking and merging our belongings, we have most of the big furniture situated and are starting to unearth enough space to hang curtains, and soon some photos/art!
We need help with storage and textiles in particular. Justin likes to keep an extra blanket on the bed when we’re not home to keep it from getting swathed in dog hair, and we’re in the market for a new one because I don’t like the color of the current one.  Also, the bench cushion is in really rough shape and I’d love to cover it. I know he’d prefer a solid (in corduroy if possible) and I’d love a muted pattern, even though our bedding has stripes. I’d love for it to be a rougher texture – wooly, or woven, or nubby.

We’re trying to stay responsible and not buy new everything, and that’s tricky since my previous style leanings and Justin’s are pretty different. Thankfully nowadays we both agree that we really like the looks that West Elm has going, it’s modern enough for Justin and fits enough with my funky taste (fair isle navajo more patterns yes!) and plethora of instruments.   I have given in to cool colors in the bedroom, although that’s not natural for me.

Here’s a video:
As this is a rather large task, I’ve decided to break this up in to a two-parter.  Today I’ll focus on the bedroom and in our next post we’ll take a look at the dressing room area.
For the bedroom, let’s break this down in to each area to tackle:
  • New throw blanket for their bed
  • New nightstands & lamps
  • Fabric to recover bedroom bench
  • Storage solutions
  • Add some much needed Ali flair in terms of styling

bed

Let’s start with the bedding.  They’re sticking with the above blue-toned striped duvet cover.  Adding another pattern in to this mix will be tough; I’d recommend a solid colored blanket with a woven texture for visual interest and to soften up the hard lines of the current bedding.  Seeing as Ali always prefers warmer colors, I’d go with a chocolate brown to really give it an inviting feel and coordinate with the stripes of the duvet cover.  As this blanket will be used primarily to prevent their dog Dakota from creating his own version of a blanket on the bed, I’d opt for something machine washable.

LLBean Vintage Matelasse Bedding - Chocolate Brown

My recommendation: the LLBean Vintage Matelasse Coverlet in Chocolate Brown.  It meets all of the above criteria and although it’s a little more expensive than something at Target or a comparable big box store (this guy clocks in @ $129 for a queen size), it’s made by a company that prides itself on quality so you know this puppy will last.  They also sell matching pillow shams so Ali could turn it into a true bedding set if she wanted, instead of it just being a barrier between Dakota and the bed.

West Elm Lexington Quilt & Shams

Or for a slightly more modern pattern in a lighter brown, I’d go with the West Elm Lexington Quilt + Shams in Clay would be a nice alternative.

West Elm Embroidered Blue Dot Pillow

To top off the bed, I would finish it with a throw pillow or two.  The West Elm Embroidered Dot Pillow Cover in Dusty Blue is a great option that is simple enough to coordinate with the current bedding, the LL Bean or West Elm coverlets and still gives a bit more of an organic feel to the bed.  The handsewn embroidery with its slightly uneven lines helps to soften the rest of the lines of the bedding.  The blue accent thread will tie in with the blue of the duvet.

Next up are the night stands.  For the left side, once they unpack some more boxes, they’ll have a decent amount of space over there.  As they’re hurting for storage, I would go the untraditional route.  Do NOT buy another nightstand.  I would go more with a cabinet or small dresser that sits at the right height.  It will give them more storage space and Ali a larger tabletop for things like her stacks of books, the lamp, etc.  And by going with something that is more unique, you won’t have to worry about it matching your pre-existing furniture.  My biggest pet peeve is quickly becoming bedroom sets that are too matchy matchy, including my own (what can I say, you live and you learn).

World Market Single Shutter Doors Sideboard

The Single Shutter Doors Holbrook Sideboard from World Market is a perfect example of something totally unique but serves all of the purposes Ali needs.  And it would add some much-needed eclectic style to the room.

Target Threshold Captains Mirror

Then above it, you could always hang a mirror, like this bargain – the Threshold Round Captain’s Mirror from Target (I still can’t believe this is $29.99 – I’m dying to get one for our place) to help reflect light from the nearby window and hang hooks on either side because as Ali puts it “We literally need a place to hang our hats.  We have so many hats!”  Spoken like a true Renaissance woman.

Ikea Bran Lamp

For styling purposes, I’d go with a ridiculously simple lamp on that side of the bed.  The BRÅN base and JÄRA shade from Ikea will do just the trick.  And because it’s basically clear glass and a white shade, there are a ton of ways to customize it if Ali so chooses, such as adding color to the glass base or sprucing up the shade.

On the other side of the bed, you could go with a coordinating lamp such as the Target Room Essentials Solid Shade Ceramic Silver lamp as Ali and Justin prefer more of a brushed silver look.

But back to the nightstands, if Ali decides to work with what she’s got, I would recommend a little DIY.  The easiest trick to perk up those existing pieces is to swap out the knobs.  Anthropologie and even World Market have a TON of options to choose from.

Anthropologie Mini Bubble Glass Knob

Ali could also bust out a can of paint and really customize them to her linking.  She and I were never afraid to get a little dirty (or crazy) back in the day.  Obligatory college photo here:

Back to the nightstands again – depending on how crafty Ali wanted to get, I’d recommend something a little like this DIY from Megan over at Craft Habit.

Lastly, Ali definitely wants to get crafty with her bench.  She’d like to recover it with a durable fabric.  I’d recommend something a little heavier weight, such as upholstery fabric.  You could go solid, but I’d take the opportunity to bring in some more organic lines with a subtle pattern, such as the Waverly Strands/Sterling fabric from Joann Fabrics.

So there you have part 1 of Ali & Justin’s GREAT MERGE.  Check back next week for Part 2!  I’ve also included the full mood board below, including a few pieces of art, the curtains, and the run they already own.

Ali's New Bedroom v.2

So what do you guys think?  Anyone else facing the Great Merge these days?  I learned a LOT from when Jefe and I did it– namely that I’m a hoarder and he’s a minimalist.  Somehow we’ve managed to meet in the middle.  For now 😉

Arrggg… A Pirate’s Room For Me

Today I have a special treat for you – SWS’s first kids room!  One of my oldest friends, Kelley, is pregnant with her second child.  As their current nursery is gender neutral, they plan to keep it as is and create a new room for their two-year-old son, Easton.  Kelley was in the preliminary planning stages and mentioned the idea of a pirate themed room for her rambunctious little guy.  So I took the idea and ran with it.

Now a word of warning – themed rooms can be tricky.  You want to incorporate the theme in a way that it is clear what that theme is, but without overpowering the room.  And kids room in particular can be difficult to walk on the right side of that line.  Can anyone say Disney Princess overload???

With that in mind, I’ve created a pirate-themed space that is a little more sophistaced than your average space for a two-year-old.  But what this will allow Kelley to do is a create a room for Easton that he can grow in; he won’t get sick of pirates that quickly with this type of styling.  And if he does, it’s an easy fix to incorporate whatever his next great love will be (Jefe and I are taking bets that it will be baseball…)  It’s truly a room that will grow with him.

So without further ado, I present Easton’s Pirate Room (and please excuse the 3 throw pillow options; I know that’s excessive for a kids room, but I just love them all and couldn’t decide!).  As Kelley’s on a budget, all items are sourced from low-cost home decor options like Ikea, Target and Etsy:

Slide1

  1. Target Threshold Carson Bookshelf – Every kids room needs a space for classics like Dr. Seuss
  2. Target Threshold Global Large Milk Crate – Toy storage
  3. Ikea Margareta Rug – What is it about red stripes that make you think pirate?
  4. Little Tykes Play ‘N Scoot Pirate Ship – Obligatory age-appropriate pirate toy
  5. Target Threshold Alicia Round Storage Basket – More storage.  These baskets are amazing.  We have 2 and are huge fans.  They just hold so much stuff.
  6. Rosenberry Rooms Embroidered Pirate Ship Pillow – Ok, so this is pricey for a pillow at $79, but it’s perfect for the room’s style.
  7. Etsy Whale Pillow Cover – A little nautical paraphanalia
  8. Ikea Benzy Land Throw Pillow – Great inexpensive pillow option
  9. BBB Chatham Quilt by Nautica – Great bedding for a boys room that can work for a variety of ages and interests
  10. Etsy Play like a Pirate Poster – I LOVE this art.  I think it perfectly describes a little boy, particularly Easton.
  11. Paper Source Cavallini Hemisphere Map Wrapping Paper – I’ve actually been wanting this to hang above Jefe and I’s long desk if we had the space.  It’s just a giant individual piece of wrapping paper with finished edges.  But it’s on great high-quality paper and feels like an old-school map.

So what do you guys think?  Anyone working on any themed rooms?  Or do you suddenly want to talk like a pirate? (If so, there’s actually a day for that… September 19.  Don’t ask how I know.)

Gloria & Harry’s Guest Bedroom

In the ongoing project that is Jefe’s parents’ home renovation, we’ve hit our first serious deadline: his parents have company coming to spend the night in 2 weeks.  The last time we touched that room you may remember (which was over two weeks ago thanks to my 36-hour jaunt to NYC), it looked a little something like this:

DSCN0873

So it’s about high-time that I get my butt in gear and get to work.  As I mentioned previously, the whole concept for this room revolved around a rug that Gloria, Jefe’s mom, brought home from a visit to her native Ecuador.  The idea to hang the rug originated from a conversation about what to hang above the headboard on the accent wall.

DSCN0624

Being a true East Coaster at heart, I’ve been fighting tooth and nail throughout the 5+ years I’ve lived in LA to disregard the fact that you shouldn’t hang anything heavy above a bed.  But apparently earthquakes are a real thing…  And as much as it pains me to admit it, Gloria and my Jefe are right: I’d much rather pull a lightweight rug off my face when the big one hits than fight with a glass picture frame that just came crashing down.

So Ecuadorian rug it will have to be.  Between the rug and the carved-wood style of the bed frame, I decided to pull some inspiration from images of South American bedrooms as my starting point:

From there, I just ran with it.  So without further ado, I bring you my plan for the room:

Once we established the rug as the focal point and decided to keep the bedframe and nightstand, I set out to find some accent furniture pieces that would provide some much needed storage, fit in to a somewhat more traditional style and wouldn’t break the bank.   I quickly found that trying to match the reddish-hued wood of the bedframe was near impossible so I chose to go with a few white pieces that would really pop against the accent wall.

The first on the list was the BIRKELAND 3 drawer dresser from Ikea.  And by positioning it on one side of the bed, it could serve double duty as a nightstand.

Ikea Birkeland Dresser

Unfortunately the BIRKELAND series does not have a lot of variety in the line, so I had to look elsewhere for a coordinating bookshelf.  Most things from Ikea were either too modern or didn’t fit the space we have available.  I coincidentally happened to stumble upon the Threshold Carson bookshelf when I was picking up baskets from Target while Jefe assembled the office furniture a few weeks ago.

Threshold Carson Bookshelf

Although on display in black, they didn’t offer the 3-shelf version in white in store so Jefe and I had to order it online.  As we have yet to assemble it, I can’t comment on my first Target furniture purchase so I’ll have to update you all on that later.

From there, I knew the bedspread had to be next.  In working with what you’ve got, I knew it had to be something more traditional that also helped to tie the existing color palette together.  Initially Gloria and I were skewing towards a flowery paisley from Bed, Bath and Beyond:

Inspiration - 3

But Jefe, the adamant flower loather, insisted we head in another direction.  So I turned to all things paisley: Pottery Barn.  I found the Charlie Organic Duvet Cover (shown in the mood board and in detail below) and am thrilled that it’s actually on sale right now as we  hope to pick it up this weekend.

PB Charlie Organic Duvet Cover

For artwork, I’ve been scouring Etsy for great photography of Ecuador that will be complimented by some simple white frames from Ikea.  As for artwork for the rest of the room, that’s still a work in progress.  Thankfully, overnight guests don’t necessitate a fully finished room (although that’s the goal).

Lastly, Gloria suggested hanging a mirror on the wall opposite the foot of the bed which I thought was a great idea.  I’m looking for something simple, possibly in a curved shape.  I don’t know if Jefe will let me get away with it, but I’d love to go with something along the lines of this one from Target:

Threshold Carved Wood Mirror

There you have it.  The latest and greatest from Sledge with Style.  In the coming week, I’ll be featuring some reader Q & A’s, a NEW recurring feature based on my love of all things film, as well as an update on Operation Homify.

April Lust List

Today I bring you this month’s LUST LIST – things that have caught my eye and made me check when my next payday is.  The weather in LA, along with the start of the baseball season, has really made it feel like spring out here.  It has me longing for days spent on the beach (and clearly continuing my obsession of Pantone’s color of the year Emerald) and nights in the stands at Dodger stadium.  I’ve also been eyeing some new kitchen linens as I think my love affair with chartreuse is quickly coming to an end.  When combined with my current Operation Homify, I’m leaning much more towards the traditional; I’ve been daydreaming again that I’m Martha Stewart and Williams-Sonoma is my playground.  And I love me a good stripe of ANY kind…… without further ado, I bring you:

Slide1

  1. ’47 Brand Brooklyn Dodger Hat – $19.99
  2. JCrew Twist Bandeau Tank (in vivid jade) – $118
  3. JCrew Superga Classic Sneakers (in white) – $65
  4. West Elm Cotton Apron (Cafe Stripe) – $24
  5. West Elm Cotton Oven Mitt (Cafe Stripe) – $12
  6. Target Nate Berkus Dipped Bowl – $15.99

What have you guys been lusting after lately?  Home decor?  A new pair of shoes for spring?  I’m headed off to NYC with Jefe this weekend for a quick visit with friends and family and I’m bound to do a little shopping while I’m there.  I’ll be sure to share my finds with all of you once I’m back!

March To-Do’s

While I’m in the midst of renovating Jefe’s parents place, I’ve started to accumulate a list of future projects and a wish list of item’s for our place.  Busting out my paint clothes has really inspired me to tackle a few larger projects to really make this apartment feel like a home.  (Hopefully a nasty ear and sinus infection won’t plague me during any of these projects like it did during last weekend’s painting extravaganza…)

Although our current apartment is a vast improvement from our last place (excluding the loss of square footage), it still isn’t quite homey enough for me.  It still just feels like a cookie cutter apartment that we’re only temporarily biding our time in.  So Operation Home-ify has official begun.

First on the list was actually inspired by our recent trip to Rejuvenation.  I’ve been hiding a purchase from you all; I finally convinced Jefe to get a little chalkboard to hang above our island/bar in our dining area.

DSCN0837

But our island is really starting to stand out– it’s the ever popular Forhoja from Ikea and is made of a light-colored wood.  It’s been sort of a catch-all for our spill-over kitchen stuff, such as serving utensils, our “bar” area, grilling paraphernalia, cloth napkins, tablecloths, etc.  I’ve been meaning to upgrade the baskets for some time too, but hadn’t really been inspired/found just the right thing.  I think it was partially due to the lighter wood; there was just nothing I found that would coordinate with it.

DSCN0846

(Please excuse the boxes that we still haven’t found a place to unpack….)

But thanks to our new little chalkboard, I’ve been inspired to take the raw wood of the island and stain it to match.  It’s a darker stain with almost a hint of gray– very rustic, and much more traditional in style.  I think it will also tie in better to the rest of the black-brown furniture we have and the silver curtains of the dining room.  Not to mention that I’m just stoked to try my hand at staining again; the last time I actually stained anything was as a freshmen in college when I helped construct and stain a circular staircase for a booth in CMU’s annual spring Carnival.

And after the staining inspiration struck, on a recent trip to Target, I picked up this beauty that I’ve had my eye on for quite some time that I thought would tie the chalkboard and soon to be stained island together with the dining table and dresser.

DSCN0849

Next up on the list is the de-modernization of a few other pieces we own.  A few weeks ago when Jefe and I took his parents to Ikea to look at my furniture choices for their new office, we discovered that a new line of drawer and door fronts for the BESTA line have been added.  They’re much more traditional and definitely more up my alley than our current drawers.  Thanks to the mix and match nature of the Besta furniture, we’ll easily be able to swap out our old drawers for these new ones.  We’re hoping to accomplish that task this weekend when we venture back to finally purchase everything for his parents’ place.

DSCN0829

(our current Besta drawers)

(hopefully our replacement drawer fronts)

In addition to the drawer fronts, another easy fix I’m planning is to add new drawer pulls for Jefe’s dresser.  Due to the lack of space in our bedroom, it’s currently being used in our dining room as “credenza” of sorts.  But it’s lacking in style, particularly with the current black and dreary hardware.

DSCN0835

What I’m really hoping to find are some of these cup pulls that only require one screw to secure them instead of requiring me to drill a second hole in each drawer.  I have yet to find them, but I have not given up hope.  They will be mine.

Deco Cabinet Cup Pull

Last on the list is to find a replacement for our other DVD storage/catch-all dresser.  We picked this up when I spruced up Jefe’s studio when we started dating.  But thanks to Operation Homify, he’s graciously agreed to get rid of it if I can find an acceptable replacement.  I’ve been trolling Craigslist, World Market and the like for something cheap, solid wood, and will add a little more character to our place (and clearly isn’t off of Ikea’s best-seller list…)

DSCN0826

(Out with the old, in with the *somewhat* new… and any suggestions for what to fill these vases with while I’m at it?!  Once I took the Christmas balls out back in early January, I haven’t found anything I think works.  I’ve got the equivalent of writer’s block when it comes to these vases…. is decorator’s block a thing?!)

That’s about it for the current to-do list at chez Sledge.  Later this week I’ll have an update on the office and bedroom paint job that Jefe and I tackled last weekend.  Let me just say that the painted paneled walls makes a WORLD of difference.  I can’t wait to finish it up, accessorize and show you the final results!
